Captain Barr, 34, a sixteen year veteran of the Sun Prairie Fire Department died in the line of duty from injuries sustained while operating at the scene of an explosion and subsequent fire in downtown Sun Prairie that also destroyed The Barr House a popular local restaurant and bar owned by Captain Barr and his wife.  Captain Barr is survived by his wife, twin daughters, parents,sister, brother, father and mother-in-law three sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and his brothers and sisters at Sun Prairie Fire Department. 


This scholarship has been established by the Honor Guard Clinic's and School's in Cory's memory.  Cory is an alum of our 2016 Milwaukee Honor Guard Clinic and is the first alum of our organization that has died in the line of duty.  We are honored to have had the chance to know Cory and be a part of his life and assist with his funeral.


The scholarship includes the following:

  • Tuition for the Funeral Operations School (including lunch, and a challenge coin).
  • Tuition for the Milwaukee Honor Guard Clinic (including daily lunch, ticket for the Brewers game, t-shirt, and challenge coin).
  • Lodging at the host hotel for five nights (Tuesday night through Saturday night).
  • Dinner at the Saturday evening departure meal.


The scholarship does not include the following:

  • Airfare (in applicable).
  • Ground transportation (rental vehicle, cost of fuel, or mileage reimbursement).
  • Evening entertainment.


The scholarship is awarded each year in April for our Milwaukee based training events.  The requirements to be considered for this scholarship are as follows:

  • First time attendee to one of our events.
  • A member of an emergency services agency (awardee does not need to be a current member of their honor guard)
